Usahihi Expressway Update: Transparency on Heavy Vehicle Regulations

Nairobi Kenya, 11th February 2025 – Recent reports circulating in various media outlets have suggested that Heavy Commercial Vehicles and Large Goods Vehicle owners will be compelled to use the proposed Usahihi Nairobi to Mombasa Expressway (Usahihi NME). We would like to take this opportunity to provide accurate information regarding the current status of the project.
First and foremost, it is important to emphasize that the Usahihi NME is still at the proposal stage. We are at an advanced stage of conducting comprehensive feasibility studies to assess the best technical, legal, commercial and financial structure that will maximize the potential impact of the expressway. These studies are critical to understanding the best way of structuring the proposal so that it leads to a win-win outcome for all stakeholders. At this stage, no decisions have been finalized, and nothing is cast in stone regarding the implementation or regulation of the expressway.
The feasibility studies cover a wide range of factors, including economic, environmental, social, and logistical considerations. We are carefully evaluating the potential benefits and challenges associated with the project, ensuring that any future development aligns with the interests of all stakeholders, including Heavy Commercial Vehicles, Large Goods Vehicle owners, and the broader transport community. These studies are designed to ensure that the Usahihi Expressway will enhance efficiency, reduce congestion, and contribute to the economic growth of the region without imposing undue burdens on any particular group.
Our approach is grounded in transparency and stakeholder engagement. We are committed to involving all relevant parties in the decision-making process, and any future regulations will be the result of thorough consultations and feedback from those most affected.
We recognize the vital role that Heavy Commercial Vehicles and Large Goods Vehicle operators play in the economy, particularly in facilitating trade and the movement of goods between Nairobi and Mombasa. Their concerns and insights are invaluable to us, and we are dedicated to ensuring that their voices are heard as the project progresses. The road is being designed to make it efficient, comfortable and economical for them as well as for private vehicles. Open dialogue and collaboration will be key in shaping an infrastructure project that serves the needs of the entire transportation network.
Furthermore, we encourage all stakeholders to rely on official updates and communications for accurate information about the Usahihi Nairobi to Mombasa Expressway. Misinformation can create unnecessary confusion. We are committed to providing clear, timely updates as the feasibility studies are concluded. Our goal is to keep the public informed and engaged, ensuring that any future developments are based on facts and thorough analysis.
In conclusion, while the Usahihi NME feasibility reports are at an advanced stage, they have not been concluded, and no final decisions have been made regarding the terms of the Project Agreement or with respect to the use of the road. We appreciate the interest and concerns from Heavy Commercial Vehicles and Large Goods Vehicle owners and assure you that your feedback and participation will continue to be an integral part of the process as we move forward. A structured stakeholder framework will be rolled out soon for us to share with you the outcome of our studies and to receive your comments on how we can succeed together.
